types of operating system depending on the mode of operation

1.Character User Interface (CUI) OS – To run this OS one has to always type command. If you want to open a file, then for that you have to type the command, when that file will open. In this OS, only the keyboard is used. Through this the computer would be controlled, the mouse has no work in it. This OS is not user friendly.

It is called Character User Interface (CUI) because it is based on character (character-character). In earlier times computers used to work like this. If you want to see how computers used to work in earlier times, then you go to the Run program in your computer, type CMD there and do OK. A window will open in front of you.

In earlier times, all the work was done here only by typing commands. Not everyone could run this type of computer. But today with the advent of GUI type computers, it has become easy for all the people to operate the computer. CUI OS like – DOS, Unix

2.Graphical User Interface (GUI) OS – You do not have to type commands to run this OS. There is no need to type command to open any file in this OS. Rather, in the folder or location in which the file is located, that file can be opened by going with the mouse.

Both keyboard and mouse are used in this OS. This OS is user friendly. Today almost everyone has computers with GUI OS, some have computers with CUI OS. GUI OS like – Windows, Linux
